AKF werden in mehreren verschiedenen Gebieten benutzt, zum Beispiel beim Aufbereiten von Trinkwasser, in dem Innenbau, in Atemmaskenfiltern, als Vorschaltung von Ionenaustauschern, in Dunstabzügen, in Pfeifen-, Zigarillo- oder Zigarettenfiltern usw.. Die Wirkungsweise von Aktivkohlefiltern ist unabhängig von von der zur filtrierenden Substanz gleichbleibend. Der Kohlenstoff kommt als Mittel zur Reduktion zum Einsatz zur Filtrierung mechanischer Partikel. Zum größten Teil werden AKF zum Filtern von Luft und Wasser angewendet.
