    I’d like to make a distinction between “teaching ptolemaic astronomy” and “teaching geocentric astronomy as fact”. Because, as it happens, I studied ptolemaic astronomy in college. Aside from both its historical importance and its relevance to some later mathematical developments, it also was certainly not some simpleminded and obviously wrong theory. Until Galileo’s telescope, it was empirically flawless. And the geocentrists were much more sophisticated and aware than people commonly think — the mathematically more elegant heliocentric theory was known even to the classic Greeks, and certainly Ptolemy himself. In fact, he mentions in Almagest that a heliocentric model simplifies the geometry elegantly…but that it would require accepting some ideas that are clearly absurd (that the Earth is in motion and that because of the lack of observed parallax of the stars, they are unimaginably, impossibly far away).

    I agree with Geoff Pullum and not with Fowler: “I would have liked to have known you” [4] seems clearer and more correct than “I would have liked to know you” [3]. Especially for what Elton John (or Bernie Taupin) was expressing, number 3 just seems odd, especially since Norma Jean is no longer with us.
