So kommen AKF in einer Menge verschiedenen Bereichen zum Einsatz. Dazu zählen z. B. das Aufbereiten von Trinkwasser, der Innenausbau von Wohnhäusern, Gasmasken, die Vorschaltung von Ionenaustauschern, Dunstabzüge aber ebenso Filter für Pfeifen, Zigarillos und Zigaretten. Das Wirkungsprinzip der AKF ist unabhängig von dem zu trennenden Stoff unverändert. Der Kohlenstoff operiert als Reduktionsmittel und filtert mechanische Partikel. Hauptsächlich werden AKF zum Filtern von Luft und H2O angewendet.
