Zu nennen sind hier beispielsweise das Aufbereiten von Trinkwasser, der Wohnhausinnenbau, Atemmaskenfilter, die Vorschaltung von Ionenaustauschern, Dunstabzugshauben aber ebenso Filter für Pfeifen, Zigarillos und Zigaretten. Das Wirkungsprinzip des Filters aus Aktivkohle bleibt unabhängig von der zu trennenden Substanz gleich. Der Kohlenstoff kommt als Mittel zur Reduktion zur Benutzung zum Filtern der mechanischen Teile. Überwiegend werden AKF zum Filtern von Luft und Wasser angewendet.
