  1. You’re making a lot of great points during this blog post however it is very hard in my opinion to concentrate on this article on the complicated page design.

…though my paternal grandmother actually went by her middle name; her given first name was Leila, which sounds both lovely and not old-fashioned at all, possibly because Leela is currently quite common among Indians.

One cause of the problem is the ambiguity of the word “rules” in technical and everyday use. Linguists know the difference between implicit rules inherent in a language, and therefore needing no formal explicitation to native speakers (eg How to form questions), and formal rules deliberately formulated by self-proclaimed language experts, which many native speakers feel obliged to observe self-consciously although they do not come to them naturally. Persons like the reviewer in question are unaware of this difference, or even of the fact that any language, with or without a literary tradition, does have “rules 1, even if no one has bothered to adorn or burden it (depending on their point of view) with “rules 2. Many linguists, such as Steven Pinker and several contributors to this blog, have been trying to educate the public about this difference, but it has not become part of public consciousness yet. Apart from good programs to train ESL teachers, too few teachers-in-training are being made aware of it, so that it has not spread much into the larger community of speakers.

On that morning before the twin towers were hit, I was commuting to mid-town from Staten Island via Express Bus through the Battery Tunnel and passing the World Trade Center, like I always did the last decade, without knowing that day would be a day that will change the way how we live for the rest of our lives. When I reached my office I was told to look at what had happened to the WTC on the Internet – the Twin Towers engulfed in smoke. I just passed those twin towers not too long ago! Those poor people in the buildings. I used to work in one of those towers. I remember thinking what if I still worked in those towers. Later that morning, Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon and Flight 93 crashed into a field in Pennsylvania killing all aboard. My former boss’s brother was one of the passengers on Flight 93. From that day on during my commute, I was very apprehensive about going over the Verrazano Bridge and going through the Battery Tunnel because seeing all the twisted metals of what remained of the towers was a vivid reminder of all the twin tower employees, fire fighters, and law enforcement personnel who had perished on 9-11 in what seemed like “the blink of an eye”.

Though we need to promote obtaining a higher educational degree to all, as the more educated our citizens are, it benefits everyone from the individual to our country as a whole, we need to promote more degrees in Science, Engineering & MATH or we will fall behind the other countries in our world!
I agree with Andre…why isn’t Colorado mentioned as above 40%
Also agree with Larry…Math degrees are extremely important also
